100 Bands You Need To Know in 2009
After we returned from NYC a couple weeks ago I picked up the new issue of Alternative Press...the "100 Bands You Need To Know in 2009" issue to be exact. Forget the fact that 90% of those bands are forgettable and 98% of them won't stand the test of time for just a second; this issue got me thinking about the sheer volume of new bands sprouting up all the time and how ridiculous it is. Seriously, this shit is getting insane. It's not AP's fault. That issue just featured 100 bands and there's thousands more popping up everyday online, so I applaud AP for filtering through the pile. Who the hell, as a music fan, has time to check out all of these bands or the money to buy 100 records these days? (I think I just found another reason why 95% of music was illegally downloaded last year!)
Technology has leveled the playing field between bands/artists and record labels. Labels are no longer necessary to get your music out there. However, just because you have a computer, like music and can create a free myspace/facebook account doesn't mean you qualify for being a "musician" or that you should release this "music" that you've created. I like food, have a stove and a refrigerator, but that doesn't qualify me as being a Chef. So the down side to all this technology is this flood of music and new bands that wouldn't have been released years ago (in some cases for the better). This non-stop barrage of music creates a frantic pace for both artists and labels alike, which hinders creativity and prevents artists from taking the time they should be allotted, creating the absolute best album they can because they have to reach some unjustly appointed time frame.
I'm not one of those people that professes "music was so much better back in the day", but I do think our generation is severely lacking in the "generation defining album" department. Don't get me wrong, there's a lot of good music out there today, but given the current pace of things its hard for artists to create something truly amazing.
Now look, before any haters get their panties in a bunch, I'm not claiming that our music is somehow superior and that we're somehow the next incarnation of the Beatles by any means. I hold us to the same high standards. A couple of years ago we were once featured on the cover of that AP issue, and up to this point, I don't even know if we (along with most other bands from our generation) have created anything that doesn't fall under my criteria above when one looks back 10 or 20 years from now. I do know we're three albums (going on four) into this thing we like to call a career and withstood a ton of shit to get to where we are, so by that fact alone, we stand a better chance of not being forgotten...yet. That all depends on how our future albums turn out and our ability to create a timeless record. I don't feel we've gotten there yet, but for the first time in our career, we're working really hard towards that goal with our newest album. Timeframes be damned. We're trying not to add to the clutter any more. This album is essentially three years in the making and we hope all the time spent will be well worth it, for you and for us, once this album comes out...oh yeah, its coming out later this year!!!!! I hope you guys will have the same reaction to our new album that I had when Nirvana released Nevermind, Guns N' Roses - Appetite For Destruction and more recently with Green Day - American Idiot..."Fuck, that's an amazing record!"

Eron, every album you guys make is timeless to me! And I do feel similar... But you have to give them credit: A lot of people want to be in bands, and I guess it's just easier for them to reach their dreams nowadays! So... hooray for them. We just have to pick the ones worth listening to, seeing in concert, and giving them a record company. And also, there are still people who get a rush from buying a new CD--I'm one of them! It's been proven that music from a CD actually sounds better then downloaded from the net. I think it's stupid to download when you can actually buy a product of the band's hard work and hold it in your hand, instead of just a file on your computer or ipod... Anyway... this is really long so I'll stop. *first to comment* YAAAY
Love ya!

So true. But keep up the good work and I'm sure your new album will rock!!
<33
Ps. Green Day rocks...but not as much as you guys =]
it's almost overwhelming as a music listener to sit down and go on myspace and look for new bands. there are one thousand bands out there i don't know exist. and about 40% of those bands are my friends on myspace and i have never even bothered to listen to them. what needs to happen is people meed to stop going out writing a song and editing it on their computer and just slapping it on the computer. with the tools we have available it's easy to start bands and myspace pages faster than it used to be. and i know i wasn't around or into music and playing an instrument when people didnt know how to use computers or text, but now i find myself drifting towards artists who didn't waltz into my computer speakers playing some sugary generic song.
people buy less cds. and im on of those freaks who have a whole collection going. and in this world i don't think theres any wya to get around stopping the downloading of music. i can hack any song off of any website and i know where to find the songs i can't. but i still buy CDs. i think artists need to focus more on live shows, gettign thier name out there and known and having the talent that the artists who are making it past a second record have. my favorite bands (hawthorne heights included) are all approaching a fourth record. the bands that have the music and the momentum and the passion behidn their music are the ones who can have fans and keep them.
but no matter how many times i say i'll check out all these bands in AP- AP is my bible. i live by it and owe everything to it- but i never do unless they stand out. a million bands with all the same descriptions and little pictures that are all the same don't stand out.
we don't need a million rip-offs of one band. that's what brings failure. what we need is someone to spark the trail take the first strides into a new direction. stand out and if they like what they are doing and have the talent behind it and the musicianship they will make it. they might not be the next radiohead or beatles or nirvana. but they will be noticed. recognized. they'll stand out. which is what we need. we need something to pull them apart from other bands.
which nowadays is found in all those bands that remain giants in the genres they are a part of. new bands need to start working towards that.
Hey members of HH, I think "Tell All Your Friends" is a pretty good contender for one of the best cds of our generation. The lyrics simply blow me away, it's so honest compared to a lot of cds that get released nowadays. <3
It's sad that you guys don't even mention this piece of awesomeness =(
Those issues are such a joke. The one you are talking about really got me thinking as well. After reading it I went back and dug out the last three '100 Bands You Need to Know...' Of the 300 bands in the three issues combined, there was maybe in the area of 70 of them who are actually relevant today. There is way too much flash in the pan crap out there.
Okay you guys are timeless!!!
Definatley one of the bands from the present that will always be heard!!!!
Can't wait ti; ypur next album!!!!!!!!!!
AMEN eron, seriously. especially to the myspace/facebook thing. I'm sick of ignorant people starting what they call "bands" just to be popular, part of the "scene" (which you've established no longer exists) or just for fun. I think everyone who's going to be in a band has to love it fully, strive to be the best, and understand that it's not a contest or about popularity. it's about doing what you love and showing it to everyone.
I know for a fact your next album will kick ass, as did the last 3, so keep it up guys, you're the greatest in my books. much love and respect
Yeah I hear ya. I used to love getting my new AP's, now I'm like "Who is this?". Having that said, they're on the cover no less. Every page damn near has a new band, it's definitely hard to keep up. There is a lot of unbelievable talent out there, and then you have the cookie cutters. It's like companies are looking for gold mines, instead of investing their time and money into unique talents. There are plenty of undiscovered bands who have the longevity, but don't fit into the 'look', or 'sound'. I crave great music, and don't settle for less. Also, I am very much looking forward to the new album! I'm so happy for you guys, you deserve everything good that has come your way. Please bring Emery on tour again, that would be so awesome.. I'm stuck on their new song 'Edge Of The World'. Keep up all the hard work!! Claud..<3
I definitely get what you're saying. There are just wayyyy to many cookie cutter bands out there nowadays. It's rare to find a band that really stands out anymore. And i'm not just saying this i promise, but i really do think that you guys are one of those bands that stands out. You just have a unique sound and i honestly can say that you guys just make really good music. Every single song. And it gets better with every album. Like i can tell you guys put your heart and soul into your music. I can't wait for the new album, i'm probably gonna roll out of bed and buy a copy the day it comes out :]. Thank you for being so damn awesome, and i hope you keep making amazing music for years to come. Much Love.<3
i agree with every word...
:)
I agree with you Eron.
You guys have made one amazing song that means alot in my life."Rescue Me" is by far my favorite of all your songs.Even better than "Life on Standby" and "This is Who We Are"
Thank you for staying a band and not breaking up after going through all that crap. You guys have helped me get through so much with your music alone. So thank you.Keep up the awesome work!
I agree. Music now is rushed; i perfer older stuff, i guess for that reason. There are only few bands i like that still perform today, like you guys and Silverstien. Alot of the musicans now are rappers or the lyrics dont mean anything. it just pisses me off. Nirvana is pretty much amazingg; and to me, you guys are pretty damn close to Nirvana in my head :) keep up the good work! I hope to go to one of your concerts soon =]
